Silicon Materials in 3D Printing

Silicone 3D printing has emerged from research into commercial production over 2020-2025, with three distinct technology platforms now serving different markets:

  • Photocurable silicone resins for SLA / DLP / LCD vat photopolymerization: enables fine-feature parts (under 100 μm resolution) but limited to silicones with reactive functional groups
  • Direct-ink-write (DIW) of two-component silicone: extrusion-based deposition of platinum-cured LSR; produces final-mechanical-property silicone parts at coarser resolution (200-1000 μm)
  • Filament-based extrusion of LSR: emerging technology adapting FDM to silicone; allows multi-material printing (rigid plastic plus silicone in same part)

Photocurable Silicone for Vat Photopolymerization

Silicone resins for SLA / DLP / LCD printing typically use methacryloxypropyl- or thiol-functional silicones cured by free-radical polymerization under UV (typically 385 nm). The challenge is that silicones don't naturally absorb UV; photoinitiators must be added (typically TPO or BAPO at 0.5-2.0 wt%) and the resin formulation must balance:

  • Cure depth (depends on photoinitiator absorption coefficient)
  • Final mechanical properties (depends on functional group concentration and crosslink density)
  • Print resolution (limited by light scattering through the resin)
  • Optical clarity (some applications require transparent prints)

Major commercial photocurable silicone resin systems: Spectroplast SiliconeRX (UV-curable LSR), Carbon CLIP-compatible silicone, and emerging Chinese specialty resin offerings.

DIW of Platinum-Cured LSR

Direct-ink-write 3D printing of liquid silicone rubber uses high-precision extrusion heads to deposit two-component LSR onto a heated build platform. Advantages: final part has true LSR mechanical properties (Shore A 30-70 typical, full tensile and tear performance); no photoinitiator residual; supports food-grade and medical-grade applications.

Major DIW silicone systems: Wacker ACEO Silicone 3D, Spectroplast (acquired by Stratasys), Innovate3D, and dedicated Chinese specialty equipment.

Application Categories

Medical device prototyping: silicone is the dominant material for medical-device prototyping due to its biocompatibility profile. 3D-printed silicone enables direct-to-prototype workflow for catheters, gaskets, anatomical models, and surgical training devices.

Consumer products: silicone phone cases, watch bands, baby products, and kitchenware prototypes. 3D printing enables rapid iteration before injection-mold investment.

Industrial elastomer parts: gaskets, seals, vibration dampers, and enclosure parts in low-volume industrial applications where injection molding is uneconomic.

Customized prosthetics and orthotics: silicone elastomer parts with patient-specific geometries (cosmetic prosthetics, orthotic insoles) benefit from direct-print workflow without tooling.

Food and consumer molds: 3D-printed silicone molds for chocolate, candies, soap, and craft products.

Silicone 3D printing materials are still emerging:

  • Photocurable silicone resins: 80-300 USD/kg, supplied by Spectroplast, Carbon, and Chinese specialty resin producers
  • DIW LSR: typically uses standard LSR adapted for printing; 30-100 USD/kg depending on grade
  • Equipment: Spectroplast / ACEO / Innovate3D commercial systems; Carbon CLIP technology adapted for silicone; Chinese specialty systems

For medical and food-contact prototyping, photocurable silicone with appropriate certification documentation is required; commodity prototyping uses standard photocurable resin or DIW LSR without specific certifications.
