Silicone Rubber for Baby Nipples and Pacifiers
Silicone rubber has become the material of choice for baby feeding nipples, bottle teats, pacifiers, and teethers globally, displacing natural latex rubber in most developed markets due to its superior combination of food-contact safety, hypoallergenic properties, sterilization resistance, and regulatory compliance.
Why Silicone Replaced Natural Rubber Latex
Latex allergy risk: Natural rubber latex contains allergenic proteins (Hevea brasiliensis proteins) that can sensitize infants and cause allergic reactions ranging from contact dermatitis to anaphylaxis. Silicone contains no proteins and is not a latex allergen.
BPA, phthalate, and endocrine disruptor freedom: Silicone rubber is inherently free of bisphenol A (BPA), phthalate plasticizers, and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals. The Si–O–Si backbone requires none of the additives that create regulatory concerns in PVC and polycarbonate alternatives.
Sterilization durability: Silicone nipples and pacifiers withstand hundreds of steam autoclave cycles (121 °C), dishwasher cycles (up to 80 °C), and UV sterilization without dimensional change, discoloration, or mechanical degradation. Natural rubber and thermoplastic elastomers degrade significantly under repeated sterilization.
Transparency: Transparent LSR grades allow parents and caregivers to observe the infant's feeding latch, milk flow, and the absence of contamination inside the teat — a quality assurance and safety feature not possible with opaque materials.
Required Hardness: Shore 30A–40A
Baby nipple and pacifier formulations use Shore 30A–40A silicone to approximate the softness and compliance of natural breast tissue. This hardness range requires very low compression force during feeding, reducing jaw fatigue for the infant. Shore 50A or harder grades feel unpleasantly stiff for infant oral contact and are not used in teat applications.
Certification Requirements for Export
United States — FDA 21 CFR 177.2600: All silicone rubber in repeated food contact must comply with extraction limits. Platinum-cured, post-cured silicone passes readily. The compound supplier's Declaration of Conformity (DoC) referencing 21 CFR 177.2600 is the required documentation.
European Union / Germany — LFGB §30/§31: Germany and the EU require LFGB certification including sensory testing (no taste or odor transferred to food). This is the critical certification for products sold in Germany, France, and across the EU. Buyers should request the LFGB test certificate by article/grade.
EN 1400 (Soothers/Pacifiers): European standard for soothers (pacifiers) covering mechanical and physical requirements, cleaning resistance, and chemical safety. Compliance is required for CE marking of pacifiers in EU markets.
ASTM F963 (U.S. Toy Safety): For teethers and items classified as toys, ASTM F963 physical and chemical requirements apply in the United States.
LSR vs HTV for Baby Products
Both HTV compression molding and LSR injection molding are used for baby products:
LSR injection molding is preferred for high-volume production (>200,000 pieces/year) of complex shapes. Flash-free molding eliminates parting line sharp edges that are a safety risk in infant products. Self-adhesive LSR grades allow direct bonding to PP or PA nipple shields without mechanical assembly.
HTV compression molding is suitable for simpler shapes at lower volumes and provides more flexibility in compound formulation, particularly for custom Shore hardness or specialty certification grades.
Transparency and Color Options
Transparent LSR (transmittance ≥90%) is the standard for premium baby nipples where visual inspection during feeding is valued. Translucent and colored variants (using FDA/LFGB-certified pigments) are used for pacifiers and teethers. Standard colors for baby products: clear, white, pink, blue, yellow, and pastel custom colors.
